Lovecraft might have said that with the passing of time, humans
distort their ancestral racial memories from the collective subconscious
(which include memories of He Who is not to be Named's name) and transform
them into what we now consider ancient religions (such as the ancient
Egyptian's gods).

IMHO, if one were to delve into the oldest human religions in HPL's
literary universe, the further back one went, the more
closely the legends and names would resemble the truth.  If one were to
actually go to HPL's universe and travel back in time in it (Heinlein's
The Number of the Beast, anyone??), you could actually see the first
humans, recently evolved from the experiments of the Elder Things (see At
the Mountains of Madness), worshipping and/or living in terror of whatever
Great Old One was still roaming about or various alien creatures (Flying
Polyps, last cities of the Elder Things above the water, Mi-go, etc.).
Their descendants many generations hence in Mesopotamia would still have
the oral traditions of their forefathers, and their ancestral memories (in
Lovecraft's world there is such a thing) to influence them in forming the
first organized religion (they built those cute ziggurats(sp?)).

Just my $0.02.  Apologies for rambling on so much.

I think Shub-Niggurath is a great name.  And, somehow, 'Shub' seems like a
good nickname for a fat cat.

Bast is the name of the Egyptian goddess of cats.  Bubastis is a city
that the Egyptians built in her honor.

Useless and probably inaccurate trivia fact:
The Persians (I think) once took an Egyptian city by catapulting
felines over the city's walls.  The Egyptians, who considered cats
divine, gave up instead of allowing more cats to be killed.

This is important.  What Lovecraft story would be complete without
disturbing dreams?

I tried to name one of our cats 'Nyarlathotep' once, because she was a
Howler in the Darkness.  Unfortunately my mother preferred 'Patchy'.
Bloody stupid name for a cat if you ask me.

Now I come to think of it though: was Nyarlathotep the Howler in the
Darkness, or was that Azathoth?

Yeah, but imagine what a horrible name "Patchy" would be for an Old One!

Azathoth is an insane mass of organic material the size of a star
somewhere way out there. I only know of one instance, back in '88,
when he passed close enough to the earth to be noticed. (My friends
said it was smoke from some massive forest fire a few hundred miles
away or somthing. Pathetic how feeble minds will grasp at such
ludicrous straws when confronted with the horrors of the real
universe isn't it?)

Um... I can't place the "Howler in the Darkness" nickname offhand...

Actually, Azathoth is described as idiotic rather rather than
insane.  The latter is a better adjective for his worshippers.  Also, he lives
at the center of infinity.  For more info read one of the Randolph Carter
stories (Through the Gate of the Silver Key, I think.  Corrections are
welcome).

Think of Azathoth as the gigantic black hole that exists at the center
of the galaxy.  The blind and idiot god, swirling chaos in the center
of everything, surrounded by hordes of lesser dancing and piping entities...
it fits.
